Fibre optic network are increasingly used for complex security systems. The benefits are quite obvious. Next to very long transmission routes that you can realize with this technique, the complete resistance to overvoltage is a huge advantage. And increasingly modern technology (e.g. 4K) requires transfer of data at very high transmission rates.
The connection of the fibre optic cable with its end piece (so-called pigtails) is carried out by splicing and welding of the single fibres. This work requires care and the right equipment.
An electric arc splicer is necessary, costing a couple of thousand with all the accessories. To get a perfect splicing, a painstaking approach is necessary. The pigtail and the laid cable have to be stripped and cleaned so far as to get a pure glass fibre (see picture below). This fibre is approximately 9 µm thick which is roughly 1/5 to 1/8 of the human hair.
After that the fibre is bluntly cut with a special cutter and the rest will be disposed immediately (maximum risk of injury!). Now the fibres of pigtails and cable can be fixed in the splicer, at specific distances to each other. The splicing unit does the rest. The device adjusts both fibres exactly opposite each other, drives them together with a specific space and welds them via electric arc. You can watch this on a monitor. After successful welding, a special metal piece is pressed in around the welding spot as protection. Then the ODTR measurement takes place, with protocols for the customer. The next splicing can follow.
To disregard third parties doing splicing and to remain flexible, AVASUN has its own splicing equipment. This ensures our organisation of tasks on site and with that, a time optimized performance of our services. Our customers appreciate it very much if a company, already working at the PV-Plant can also do the splicing for e.g. the monitoring system as well.
